Post Operative Instructions After a Root Canal Treatment
- Root Canal treatment is done, to save your decayed/carious tooth, that might or might not have pain. The treatment might require a Single sitting or Multiple sittings at an interval of two or three days.
- Your Dentist might prescribe you with Antibiotics and painkillers (if required) one or two days prior to your appointment date. Kindly start with your medications as instructed by your Dentist. It is essential to start with pre-medications because the local anesthetic will not act completely in the area of severe infection. Starting with an antibiotic course prior to your appointment reduces the infection, just enough for the anesthetic to act completely. Even after prescribing, if you have not started or you have missed your medication, do inform your Dentist about the same.
- Always eat something one hour prior to your appointment. Do not go empty stomach or do not starve before your appointment. However, if you are fasting, kindly inform your Dentist about the same.
- Your teeth might require to be numbed with a local anesthetic prior to your treatment so that you do not experience any pain during the treatment.
- Avoid eating anything, post your treatment, until the effect of anesthesia wears off. Do not check if the effect of anesthesia has worn off, by biting your lips or the tongue. You might not realize the amount of pressure with which you are biting and that might lead to a cut or an ulcer on your lips or cheeks.
- If your Root Canal treatment requires multiple sittings, your Dentist would fill the tooth with a Temporary cement. Do not eat anything for an hour until the cement hardens and sets.
- If your tooth requires multiple sittings, Do complete the treatment in the stipulated amount of time as suggested by your Dentist. Do not delay your treatment at your will. Doing so can lead to the re-infection as well as an increase in the number of sittings required for your treatment. That might ultimately increase your treatment cost as well.
- You can Brush all your Teeth as usual, including the tooth undergoing treatment. Flossing should be done at least once in a day.
- Avoid eating anything from the side of the tooth that is undergoing treatment. Chewing of food(even soft food) would inflict pain in the tooth undergoing treatment. You can start eating from that side once your entire treatment is completed with placing of a Cap/Crown on the tooth.
- Post Root Canal Treatment since there is no blood supply to the tooth, the tooth tends to become Brittle. Avoid eating hard food from over the Root Canal treated tooth. Eating hard food over that tooth might fracture and damage your tooth.
- Avoid eating Sticky and Chewy food from over the capped tooth. Sticky chewy food over time can make your cap fall off from over your tooth. If your cap falls off and if the tooth is not damaged, you can get the same cap recemented by your Dentist, provided you visit him within one weeks period of time. If you neglect and delay visiting your Dentist over a week the same cap cannot be fixed and you will have to go in for fabrication of a new cap.
- Do inform your Dentist about any Medical conditions that you have. Informing your medical history is of utmost importance so that no other complications arise during your treatment. You might be asked to get a Fitness certificate from your physician prior to your treatment.
Post Operative Instructions after A Tooth Colored Composite Filling.
- The Composite/Tooth colored Resin Filling hardens immediately after the Dentist cures the Filling with blue intensity Light.
- You can eat your food immediately from the opposite side once your Filling is done. You Don't have to wait for an hour or so for the Filling to set.
- The Composite Filling usually takes a day or two to settle down. Even after two days you still experience any discomfort do inform your Dentist about the same and schedule an appointment with him.
- If you feel the Composite Filling is too High and you feel some discomfort or pain while closing your mouth, then get an appointment scheduled with your Dentist and get the high point reduced by him.
- Brush all your teeth including the filled tooth as usual. You may also use a Mouthwash in addition to Brushing. Floss all your teeth at least once in a day. Do not compromise on your Daily Oral Hygiene Protocol.
- Avoid playing or ticking the slight margin of the Filling that you might feel, with your nails. Doing so might Damage the Filling, Chip the Filling and that area would become, food and plaque retaining area, causing further gradual damage to your teeth. If you feel the margin of the Filling is causing you some uneasiness, schedule an appointment with your Dentist and get the margin of the Filling smoothened and polished.
- Avoid Biting on Excessively Hard food, such as Hard Ladoos, Hard Chikkis, Hard Candys 🍭, Hard Chana, Carrots, Nuts, if you are a nonvegetarian then Bones🍗, etc. Doing so might fracture and damage your Composite Filling.
- If a Composite Filling is Done on your Front/Anterior Teeth, avoid bitting on food with your front teeth directly. Avoid Bitting Nails, or taking a bite of an apple directly. This might fracture or Damage the Filled teeth.
- Staining of Composite Filling can be avoided if you can avoid drinking Tea, Coffee, Cola drinks, Soya Sauce, also avoid Smoking.
Complete or Partial Dentures; post insertion instruction for patients.
- Once you receive your Denture (Complete/Partial) do not immediately start using it for chewing your Food from the first day itself. During the first few days, the denture might trouble you by pricking certain areas on your gums or cheek. You can get rid of the discomfort with some minor trimmings done by your Dentist in Follow up Visits. If you have developed an Ulcer or minor cut, kindly apply some Glycerine or local anesthetic gelly for intraoral use. And inform the dentist about the same so he can trim off the excess edges that hurt you.
- For at least a Week just try to make the habit of wearing the denture. So that your mouth accepts the denture completely.
- For the First week after wearing denture you might experience excessive salivation. Salivation will gradually reduce as you keep using the denture through the week.
- During the First week remove the denture only while you are having food and while sleeping. You should wear your denture for the rest of the day. Try wearing the denture for as much time as possible. So that the denture is accepted well and early by you.
- You would face difficulty to speak clearly in the initial week as something new(your new Dentures) are placed in your mouth and you are not used to talking with the denture in your mouth. Don't panic or get stressed. Eventually, after practice, you will be able to speak clearly and fluently. From the Second week of receiving the Denture start practicing to speak with the Denture on. For this Try reading the headlines of the newspaper loudly. You should read the text loudly enough, that if you are sitting in the Hall and your spouse is two rooms away in the kitchen He /She should be able to hear what you are Speaking. You can choose to read your favorite Fantasy novel, religious books, Stotras Mantras out loud as well. Choose the book you like reading.
- While you Sleep in the afternoon or at Night, do not sleep with the Dentures in Mouth. Remove the Dentures and place it in a small box filled with room temperature water. Do not place it anywhere outside in the open air. The Temperature changes in the atmosphere might affect the make of your Dentures, if kept dry in the open air.
- After you get adjusted to wearing the Denture, start with chewing of Soft Food like soft Bread, crunchy Biscuits, Idlis, Chapati soaked in Daal or curry, if you are a nonvegetarian you can have soft pieces of well-cooked chicken or soft meat of your choice. Gradually move towards eating semi-solid and solid Foods. Avoid Eating excessively hard food like hard nuts, Hard Ladoos, hard candy, carrots, hard nuts, if you are a nonvegetarian avoid breaking bones.
- Clean your dentures with just normal handwash soap and denture cleaning brush. Clean your dentures after every meal. Do not use toothpaste to clean your dentures.
- If you are using Denture Adhesives with your Dentures, keep the Dentures clean, as the residual adhesive combined with food debris can lead to fungal growth on the denture surface as well as your gums.
- Once you start using the Dentures, the Denture might hurt somewhere or the other during the initial one or two weeks. Visit your Dentist to your satisfaction to get the pricking sharp points reduced by your Dentist. Unless and until YOU don't make a Habit of wearing your Denture, The Denture would never get Adjusted. You have to take the initiative of wearing the Denture until you form a Habit of wearing it without getting conscious.
